Robert is off gallivanting the southern seas. So Steve went rustling through the archives and found this Oscar worthy show from 2014.
Winners that year included Matthew McConaughy, Jared Leto, Cate Blanchett, Lupita Nyong’o, Alfonso Cuarón for “Gravity,” and “12 Years A Slave” for best picture.
Robert Horton thinks the whole award industry is a little to pat and that there is a little too much attention paid to the marketing campaigns of the filmmakers. But, Steve points out, 2014 was a pretty decent year for the movies. But, for both Steve and Robert, the best part of the Oscars is that it lets all of us perform what we like to think of as a meta-analysis of the Oscar nominations, revealing the shifting natures of American cultures.
Of course, considering the uproar over the very white nominee list this year, 2014 seems like an anomaly.
What do you think? In listening to this show, Steve got some ideas for how to watch the 2016 pageant.
