Robert Horton and Steve Scher look at a tough and sobering film from Israel about divorce, “Gett:The Trial of Viviane Amsalem.”
An Israeli woman, portrayed by Ronit Elkabetz, is trying got finalize her divorce, or gett, from her estranged husband. She is forced to defend herself against her country’s religious marriage laws. The film is the third about Viviane and her disintegrating marriage, but Robert says you don’t need to see the first two to both understand the film and feel trapped in its bleak frame.
“Gett-The Trial of Viviane Amsalem” showed at the Seattle International Jewish Film Festival at Siff, March 21st. A theater run hasn’t been announced yet.
